My requirements: Cheap PC (not laptop), small foot-print, low-power, decent performance. Purpose: Learn Linux (try out various distros) on x86/x64 – the best platform for Open Source Software.

Background: I recently shifted to team red AMD – 3600XT and 3900X, run Win 8.1/10 for programming. But wanted a minimal foot-print PC I can use with my existing monitors and keyboard using KVM switches.

Celeron/Pentium/i3 NUCs fit the bill (Atoms are painfully slow). NUC7CJYH (Celeron J4005) is too slow, i3 NUC8BENH is not value for money. Took the middle path of NUC7PJYH.

First and foremost – this is a 7th Gen processor (Pentium Silver J5005), circa end-of-2017. 4C/4T, 10W (quiet fan, 24×7 as media server if you want), GPU built-in. Wifi and Bluetooth 5.0 card is soldered on motherboard (unfortunately not replacable). Red-alert: this card has poor support on Linux 4.x kernels, and CentOS 8.2 installer would not boot with some weird error. If I disable the card from BIOS, CentOS boots, but WiFi connection goes into an infinite loop of crashing and restarting. I managed to get it working by upgrading to 5.x kernel, or using a wired USB-powered mini-router. Worked out-of-the-box for Fedora 32, Ubuntu 2020.2, Win 10 thankfully.

This NUC officially supports 8GB, and is known to work upto 16GB (8GBx2). Be aware that for 16GB, don’t try higher than CL17 latency (i.e. CL18, CL19, etc.), try CL17 or less, but is very picky even then. I tried Crucial Ballistix 2666 MHz 8GBx2 pack, twice, before I could get it to work – not worth the time spent really.

All 4 USB ports are USB 3.0, no USB-C. 2 HDMI, though I won’t be driving it that hard. Supports only 1 disk – SATA 2.5″.

Received with BIOS version 0053, updated to 0057 latest as of Nov 2020. Some internet reviews report it won’t boot headless (no monitor connected, server usage), for me it works, at least with latest BIOS firmware.

Came with 19V DC power brick, but no power cable (3-pin, bought separately).

Performance with 16GB and Samsung 850 Evo 500GB SSD pulled from an old build: Not blazing fast, not even snappy, but for my usage, works great. I suspect it might be very accepable for everyday tasks too on MSWin – school video calls, wordprocessing, video, audio.

3 stars because WiFi hit/miss with Linux, picky about RAM (though you should be good if you stay within 8 GB), no power cable (come on).

Purchased this NUC for my AV receiver HTPC at low cost. Paired with Kingston 240gb SSD and Adata 8GB DDR4 RAM 2400 mhz. After putting some configuration to audio passthrough/ beatstream via HDMI on Media player classic, Kodi and VLC, Dolby Atmos is working like charm. Check the input an it’s true. Now I’m able to play all the audio format which my AV reciver supports. Atmos, DTS-X,DTS HD MA, DDP, DolbytrueHD, High-res audio etc. The processor J5005 also support 7.1 channel audio natively with latest video and audio codecs so, in audio control panel in windows 10 I’m able to select between stereo, 5.1, 7.1 and Dolby Atmos for Home theatre. Wow, awasome experience. love the NUC.
It has all the features for building a mediaPC/HTPC I want, Dual HDMI 2.0a with HDCP 2.2, dual array Mics, HDMI CEC, infrared port , SDXC card slot, natively supports latest audio and video formats etc.
Atlast with this package Power cord is not shipped with this product, need to be purchased separately..but in this price, the features I got, it is very reasonable.

Didn’t like. Amazon executives doesn’t know the difference of power cord and adapter. No power cord is included with the box.as per Amazon customer care power cord is not included. This is not worth to buy. Power cord, ram, HDD cost 4000 rs add another Rs. 5000 to get new laptop.
