Update: 6 Dec 18 – Having received another replacement router (the third unit now) I have now successfully updated firmware to v1.1.0.44 but only doing so via router’s own firmware update option not via any separate download from Netgear’s website. It seems that if you independently download the v1.1.0.44 firmware file from Netgear’s website and then try to upgrade, this file is corrupt and you will brick the router beyond recovery. If you intend to opt to upgrade the firmware, please do so by logging onto the router user interface and clicking on Firmware update option near the top. This way you will get an uncorrupted file and successfully update your router to v1.1.0.44.

Original post – Router comes shipped with firmware v1.1.0.40. On the Netgear website you can download the most recent version of v1.1.0.44 released in November 2018. Upgrading to this firmware will brick the router beyond use. Sent first one back and on receiving another router, only upgraded firmware from v1.1.0.40 to v1.1.0.42 which went as it should. I then performed an upgrade from v1.1.0.42 to the newest of v1.1.0.44 and again, the router became a break and there is no way to recover not even using the TFTP method as it will simply not start. Warning, there is a firmware corruption of v1.1.0.44 on the Netgear website, so I advise Do Not Upgrade firmware to v.1.1.0.44. Have sent second router back and now have a third one being sent out. Will try and speak with Netgear to advise that the most recent released of the firmware is corrupt. Other than that, it seemed great bit of hone-user kit.

BOUGHT THIS FOR A NEW HOME NETWORK SETUP BETWEEN A VIRGIN SUPERHUB 2 AND A NETGEAR SWITCH AND THEY ALL WORK WELL TOGETHER

I HAVE A WIRED ONLY NETWORK BUT THIS ROUTER COMES WIFI ENABLED BY DEFAULT HAS TO BE CONFIGURED BY A NET LOGIN TO GAIN INTERNET ACCESS SO ENSURE YOUR PC OR AT LEAST ONE NETWORK DEVICE IS WIFI ENABLED OR YOU’LL GET STUCK – ACCESS THE ROUTER HERE: 192.168.1.1

I RECOMMEND YOU DOWNLOAD THE FULL USER GUIDE FROM NETGEAR WHICH HELPED ME OVERCOME THIS CONUNDRUM WHICH IS NOT EXPLAINED IN THE SETUP INFO THAT COMES WITH IT:

ONCE IT WAS SETUP I COULD DISABLE WIFI

REMEMBER TO CHANGE YOUR LOGIN DETAILS FOR ADDED SECURITY AS DEFAULT USER NAMES AND PASSWORDS FOR ALL ROUTER ARE EASILY FOUND ON THE WEB

I AM AN ADVANCED USER SO I COULD RESOLVE THE ISSUE MYSELF BUT FOR A NON TECH SAVVY HOME CONSUMER THIS PRODUCT MAY WELL CAUSE HICCUPS IF THEY DON’T USE WIFI – I SUGGEST NETGEAR UPDATE THEIR QUICK INSTALLATION GUIDE FOR THOSE THAT DON’T

OTHERWISE A SLEEK AND SOLID CONSTRUCTION WITH A USB PORT AND NICE SPEED OVER WIRED – I CANNOT RATE WIFI FOR SPEED OR RANGE AS I DID NOT USE IT OTHER THAN FOR SETUP

ROUTER HAS AN INTUITIVE INTERFACE WITH COMPREHENSIVE INSTRUCTIONS ON CONFIGURATION IN THE USER GUIDE WITH DECENT FIREWALL CONTROLS

I CANNOT RATE THE NIGHTHAWK APP (WHICH IS WHAT NETGEAR ARE PROMOTING AS AN EASY SETUP APP ON MOBILE DEVICES) AS I HAVE NOT TRIED IT – NOR TECH SUPPORT AS I DID NOT ASK FOR HELP

OVERALL I’D SAY THIS ROUTER IS GOOD TO GO FROM THE BOX FOR WIFI CONSUMERS – NEEDS A COPY OF THE USER GUIDE INCLUDED FOR THOSE THAT AREN’T (EVEN IF IT’S JUST A URL TO THE PDF DOWNLOAD)

I BOUGHT THIS ROUTER BASED ON OTHER REVIEWS HERE AND AM GLAD I DID

I’ve used one for myself for nearly 2-years now and never had a connection or speed problem since replacing my original BT-Smarthub (which lies about its range!) with this one which is actually better than it makes out to be, I loved it so much I’ve bought 3 more; one for my parents, one for my parents in law and one for my friend. Every single person has agreed their internet drops out less, has a better over-all range and due to its superior fire-wall features and advanced options in comparison to other brands and even ‘default’ ones sent out my the likes of BT, TalkTalk and NowTV its nothing short of secure, reliable and blazingly fast. It also keeps cool (literally it never gets hot!) I’ve had 18 devices connected for a month at one point and still had no problems at all even managing to keep up with 3 individuals all playing Elite; Dangerous (a network demanding game) all at the same time. It’s that powerful and reliable, and secure once properly setup that my parents use it for their home-business server because its *just that good*.

Due to moving and me actually losing my last-one I’m going to buy this model yet again because I know if it says ‘NetGear’ its a brand I can trust from now on.

The R6260 is better than the basic router you get from an ISP, but still lacks many features. The average home user will probably find it OK, but…

The best feature is the WiFi. The signal is strong and data transfer is fast. However, the router has only a basic firewalling capability and does not appear to add device names to a local DNS server. There is no reverse ARP (needed for remote wakeonlan) and getting VPNs to work is a real problem. The router supports BT IPv6, but I am not convinced that there is any sort of firewall for incoming/outgoing IPv6. The Netgear User Interface is clunky and slow.

Firewalling seems mostly targeted at the suspicious parent market and focuses on outgoing controls and site blocking. It allows you to configure “secure NAT” or “open NAT”, but does not explain what the difference is. Given that incoming packets via a NAT Router have to be associated with an outgoing stream or an explicit port forwarding rules, it is difficult to see what they mean by this.

There is a “VPN passthrough” mode but I could not get IPsec to work reliably through the router (from a Home computer to remote server). It will connect but there is something interrupting the data flow after the first few bytes. Reducing the MTU does not help. I suspect that the NAT gateway doesn’t like IPsec and packet fragmentation. Others may be more successful, but don’t be too surprised if this router blocks access to your corporate VPN.

I tested out the R6260 with a Netgear DM200 as the modem. The combination works but there seems to be no way to access the DM200’s user interface from the local LAN e.g. to check on the line speed. Given they are both Netgear products you would have thought that the router would allow for packet routing between LAN and WAN as well as PPPoE – my venerable Billion 7800 had no problem doing this.

Given that the WiFi capability is very good, I will probably use the router in “WiFi Access Point Only” mode and get a better modem/router for internet access. The 3 star rating reflects the WiFi and that the ordinary home user will find it adequate.

I don’t know if it was my luck or not but the exprience i had with this router was the worst. I decided to purchase a Netgear and stay away from LinkSys (had several ones) and seem to fail almost in 2 years time (maybe only my very first one lasted longer than 2 years).

From day one i had issues with the Netgear. WiFI was lost every time i was making changes on the router (even small ones) for some reason. I gave it a try and tried to troubleshoot it a little bit and see if it was my ISP but i verified that ISP was working OK. It kept loosing WiFi everytime i was making changes!

The WiFi reach seemed to be low also even though it shows it has some good range, a repeater i have showed very bad connection (wireless) whereas with my previous router my repeater had a decent connection and was working fine.

Port forwarding was not working at all. I am sure i had it correct as i copied everything from before. I couldn’t reach my devices even internally, didn’t bother to do it externally!

While trying to figure out what was going wrong, (and whay made me return the router) was when the 2.4GHz SSID transmitted was lost! My devices couldn’t detect it even though the router was showing that it was enabled and operational. I rebooted the router but nothing, deselected/saved/selected again and gave it another try, it worked only for a minute, but then again it was lost and no device could detect the 2.4GHz network, only the 5GHz!!

As i said, it could be my luck but as a first experience it was the worst of all. Something that should have been easy to setup took 3 days of troubleshooting. Ended up putting back the faulty LinkSys until i get the new one.
