I wanted to love the Samsung Gear Sport. It’s a good smartwatch, but when it broke, Samsung won’t fix it. They’ve been terrible about the warranty.
A couple of months after we bought the watch, a small window fell out of the back of the watch. I think it’s the glass over the pulse sensor, and it’s embedded in the watch back (or at least it was).
We sent the watch to Samsung for repair, but the fix only held for a few weeks before the window fell out again. We sent it to them for another attempt. This time they returned the watch unrepaired, saying it was out of warranty because we’d damaged it, somehow.
It’s on the back of the watch. You know, the side next to your skin? So I looked. The watch is still brand new: there are no marks, no scratches, no dents, no bends, nothing. The Samsung rep insisted it must be broken since the repair shop listed it as ‘damaged.’ There was nothing they could do.
I insisted. They suggested I sent it to a ‘Triage center,’ although that seemed like a euphemism for the repair shop. I demurred and insisted. They transferred me to the second tier support, who also insisted that we’d damaged our new watch beyond any reasonable warranty. I suggested that any severe damage was either a pre-existing defect or the result of the first repair.
(Honestly, the watch is pristine. I haven’t a clue what damage they believe we inflicted. There’s a little glue left from Samsung’s first repair attempt, but that’s it. Moreover, a watch is a rugged package. Think for a second how difficult it might be to dent or bend the back of a watch.)
They wouldn’t change or budge, insisting (sight unseen) that the watch was too damaged. I insisted that this was a simple warranty issue. I wasn’t angry at them — they’re just reps following Samsung’s script — but this is an obvious warranty issue.
Eventually, they allowed me to ship the watch back to their repair shop. The ticket still said we may have damaged the watch, but they comped the repair. They also changed the problem to “Cradle will not hold phone,” for some reason, but they insisted that I won’t have to pay for the repair.
I probably should have held out longer. This will be Samsung’s excuse later if there are any more issues. “Ah,” they’ll say, “nothing we can do. You voided your warranty.” I know I’m buying myself more trouble.
Anyway, this was terrible service. Yes, the Samsung watch is a robust and well-integrated smartwatch. When it works, it’s great. Just remember that it comes with an added risk: if it breaks, Samsung may deny the warranty.

Samsung’s watch is great, but don’t expect to get much out of the default built-in features. The app store is a cesspool of pay-apps that are complete garbage. The included watch band has raised lettering on the reverse side which rub against skin and caused a fungal infection on my wrist.
To get the most out of this watch, I did the following:
Used athlete’s foot cream for 2 weeks without wearing the watch to eliminate the fungal rash.
I bought a new watch band, one without the raised lettering on the back.
I removed all third-party apps and only use official Samsung apps.
And now I absolutely love the watch. I have an original Google Pixel and nearly all of the features work with my phone. This was a big concern I had while buying, and it is a non-issue now.
I get about 2 days of battery before I decide to charge, which is pretty good for all the features the watch has. I have used it swimming with no issues.
I have had an issue with the heartbeat sensor. It detects the heartbeat fine, it shows up as a perfect heartbeat on the screen, but it fails to detect the rate. Apparently this is a common issue and it’s fixed by a restart of the watch every time it happens.
The sleep tracking is amazing as well.

I kept this watch for nearly the full thirty days hoping I could make it work, but I ultimately decided to return it.
What I like:
The screen is fantastic. The colors are bold and the images are crisp. There are some really great watch faces you can download for free.
The bezel is a great way to navigate your way around the watch. It’s really responsive and has a great feel to it. The touch screen is also really responsive.
I like that you can respond to texts from the watch. You can use S voice (I haven’t used it but it doesn’t have great reviews), write on the screen with your finger, or use a predictive keyboard. The last two options work great.
The sleep, stairs climbed, and step trackers all do a nice job.
The watch looks great. I got a number of compliments on it with several people asking if I was using an Apple Watch.
The 20mm bands are super easy to swap out so you can change the look of the watch.
The do not disturb feature is nice. It turns off the acceleraometer so your watch light doesn’t turn on while your trying to sleep and it keeps you from getting vibrations from notifications. You can set it to turn on the do not disturb feature at a particular time every night and then off again at a designated time in the morning. This also extends your battery life because the accelerometer is turned off for those hours.
I personally like that there is no speaker.
It has a “water use” option that keeps the screen from going crazy while you’re taking a shower or playing in the water.
I love the reminder widget. It was probably the feature I used the most. It’s super easy to set the reminder, check it off, or change the time if you haven’t finished the task and want a second reminder.
What I didn’t like:
The constant heart rate tracking and 10 minute tracking did not work for me. It tracked my heart rate fine while I was sleeping and while I was working out (sort of) but the rest of the day it wouldn’t really take my heart rate. I called Samsung and they told me to reset the watch. That worked – for about a day.
The “always on” watch face isn’t very bright and drains the battery by a significant amount. More importantly, it’s just a basic watch face. I thought it would keep the screen on so I could easily look at my running data. It doesn’t. I ended up turning it off. (You can download the Flaunt widget which will keep any screen of your choosing on for 30 minutes but it drains even more battery life than the standard always on feature. In my opinion, it’s worth the drain so you can see your stats when you’re running.)
Here’s the deal breaker for me. It’s an abysmal running watch. If you just want to log that you went running, for how long, and a fairly accurate distance, this watch will work fine for you. If you want to know your average pace in any practical way while you’re running, you’re out of luck with the Samsung health app. It gives you your average pace over the last 10 seconds or something like that. I’m not really sure what it’s doing. It will tell you your average mile pace at every mile but that’s not the least bit helpful while you are trying to pace the mile.
You can try the map my run app and it might give you a better average pace, but I didn’t bother because reviews say it suffers from another deal breaker issue the Samsung app also suffers from (which makes me think it’s a watch issue not a software issue) – The GPS stinks. It acquires a signal very quickly but it lost the signal several minutes into every outdoor run I went on (admittedly only a few because it’s so stinky hot right now but still) and never reacquired the signal. I don’t have complete GPS data for a single outdoor run.
Also, the heart rate monitor is way off on intense runs. It seems to do fine in the resting and aerobic ranges, but it gets way off when you go into the anaerobic range. My heart rate was in what I would guess was the high 160’s to low 170’s and the watch would tell me it was as high as 200bpm. There is absolutely no way my heart rate was that high. That would require a mild cocaine overdose or something.
Turning the screen on using wrist motions almost never worked while I was running. It’s like the extra motion of running confused the accelerometer and it couldn’t tell I was turning my wrist to look at the watch face. (See Flaunt app above for a work around). When I’m running trails, I just want to be able to glance at my watch and get my eyes back on the uneven terrain. I done want to flip my wrist 10 times until the screen decides to turn on or have to hit a button to get it to turn on.
Overall:
If you’re comparing this to a Fitbit Versa or some other fitness tracker smart watch, I think this is a great option. I can pretty much guarantee you will love the user interface.
If you’re hoping this is a great looking running watch like I was, it’s not. I think I might get the Vivoactive 3. The screen won’t be as beautiful and the user interface probably won’t be as nice, but Garmin knows how to make a running watch. Plus, you can pair a chest strap so you can get the most accurate heart rate data.
Andrew Woodyear, author of The Really Big Book Of Sudoku and other fun puzzle books –
I must say I love this watch, it has a sleek and simple design that makes it look like a traditional watch.
I initially got it for GPS tracking while going on trail runs, however, I’ve found myself wearing it pretty much all the time.
These are my thoughts on it….
Initial Setup-
This was a breeze, I installed the Galaxy Gear App on my Galaxy S8 and followed the directions. The watch was up and running within a few minutes. The bluetooth connection between the watch and phone has been solid with no issues staying connected. I noticed that even when I am out of range the watch switches to wifi and I still can receive notifications from my phone over the internet. Cool stuff indeed.
Comfort –
The included band fits well and is big enough to fit my large wrist. It tends to get a bit dirty after running, I usually wash it off right after to prevent it from getting too dirty. Have not had any skin irritation using the watch so far.
Sleep tracking –
If you wear the watch at night it will automatically detect when you fall asleep using a combination of motion sensing and your heart rate. I really like the sleep report it shows each morning with a simple graph showing your sleeping pattern along with your sleep efficiency.
Battery Life –
I can usually get 3 days or so between charges. Battery life is significantly lower when I use Endomondo with GPS to track my runs though, with charge levels reaching 50% at night. I usually just put the watch to charge while showering to keep the battery topped up so it hasn’t been an issue.
Software –
The Tizen OS is very smooth and gives quick access to various apps using the rotating bezel. I’ve never had any apps crash on the device, stability so far is great. I knew before purchasing that the app selection is limited but the main fitness apps that I use perform well.
Overall I love this watch there’s just one thing I wish was included, the ability to review older messages along with creating new messages in apps such as Whatsapp and Telegram.
When I receive messages it will only show the most recent message from apps like Whatsapp, currently there is no way to see older messages. You can respond to messages but it would be nice to be able to create a new message from scratch to send to a contact. Only new SMS messages can be sent from your contact list on your watch, however, it would be nice if this capability was expanded to include other apps like Whatsapp, Telegram etc.
Those are some of my thoughts, definitely would recommend this watch to anyone looking for an attractive watch that just works.
