Oscar Gerardo Rodriguez Lango –
About 2 years ago I wanted a pair of in-ear headphones with good sound quality. I was getting tired of listening to the AirPods Pros and needed something fatter that could offer more detail & depth. I originally spent $300 on the Sennheiser Momentum 2 and at first I liked them, but could tell no matter how loud I made them, there was still this “hollowed out” sound I couldn’t sit with. They sounded good, but it wasn’t enough. After researching Sennheiser’s website I found their most expensive In-Ear Headphones at the time
The IE 80s BT for $500. Built in DAC. Lossless Bluetooth Audio Codecs.
I didn’t know much about digital audio converters or bluetooth codecs but I knew wired was better, because I used to have the Bose QC15 and going wireless was never the same.
These headphones essentially brought the resolution comparable to CD quality. What a leap in Technology!
I check amazon, and it’s on sale for $300! The same price as the Momentums! Perfect!
The sound quality was exactly what I was looking for. I have the Nuraphones, I have the Sennhieser 6xx from Massdrop, I have a pair of Yamaha HS5 studio monitors. Sony wh-1000xm2, Bose Quietcomfort 15 & 20 and late IE2 Bose in-ear headphones. I have Skullcandy ink’d, AirPods and AirPods pro.
When I want full immersion for my listening, the IE 80s BT are my go to every time. These headphones will change the way you listen to music, and are well worth the compromises.
I compromise on form factor and battery life for high fidelity audio.
Using the comply tips they fit snuggly in the ear, and so comfortable I easily forget about them. The loop around the ear so they stay in, sometimes it can get annoying with glasses or wearing a mask around my ears, but again worth the slight inconvenience. Watching movies are incredible… You get so much detail the sound brings you into the scene. You can put them at full volume and literally feel the kick drum and snare hits beating against your eardrum. The sound stage is impeccable… after 2 years of using these headphones they still manage to exceed my expectations. The sound is remarkable and they do not disappoint.
There are hiccups with the product… I prefer to have an uninterrupted listening experience but occasionally the headphones will say “headphones disconnected” then immediately resume. I know the bluetooth codecs are transmitting a lot of data, but it doesn’t need to waste its breath to tell me it skipped like a vinyl record.
Another slight annoyance is sometimes upon powering on the connection says it’s there but the music doesn’t play, so then I have to hold the power button so it goes into pairing as restarts….because the pairing button is the power button.
I appreciate the onboard volume control. They are soft and click, and they move the volume in half steps so you can find the perfect volume to fill your ears. Theres also a little beep when you reach the highest volume so you know the limit. I wish there was a way to turn off that functionality but it’s easy to live with.
The manual base adjustment is great… just set it to the middle… too much bass can cause ear fatigue and cloud the music, and too little isn’t enough. I lost my bass adjustment key so it’s staying there 😀
They also come in handy for phone calls or discord when I’m cross platform gaming with friends, because I can wear the gaming headset over one ear and still talk through the mic around the neck loop.
I recommend these headphones to any friend that appreciates listening to music, I even buy it for family & friends as birthday presents because this purchase has brought the simple pleasure of good listening back to it’s ideal state. in my life, and they were $300 at the time.

Note this review is for when these headphones on sale for a significant discount.
I got them while I was shopping around for a new headset to replace my ageing, falling apart M1000xm1. These caught my eye because they are much lighter than the 1000xs and can easily rest on the neck without looking like you have two tin cans resting on your chest. That was a pretty big selling point. Since I was looking to get something to replace my 1000xs I wanted something that sounded amazing. I will primarily be comparing these to them.
Design
The Design of the necklace, for the most part, is well made though the last foot from the end of the necklace to the earbuds seemed a little flimsy. For the most part, these necklace style earbuds are very nice.
The Fit
The earphones come with wingtips that are designed to go around the ear for a more secure fit. I think it’s because the actual buds are quite small compared to many other earbuds on the market. They would easily fall off if they are not secured around the ear. Not everyone is a fan of wingtips that wrap around the ear, but personally prefer it this way. It did get a little annoying to try to fit the earbuds behind the ear each time though. So that is a pretty big negative.
Sound
I chose a couple of songs and explained why I chose them. I also tested a couple of other Bluetooth models, Jabra Elite 65T, and some older Samsung Bluetooth earbuds, but since these retail for 600$, that wasn’t a fair comparison and focused mainly on the Sonys 1000xM1 (mostly corded and but also via Bluetooth).
Hotel California – Egales
I chose this song because there are many layers of instruments that get played simultaneously. Many cheaper headphones aren’t able to separate all the notes. Even some midrange headphones fail to make the song amazing or make the cymbals sound like tin cans. I think it’s a good starting point based on my music tastes. Right off the bat, the Sennheiser IE 80S Bt was able to separate the many different instruments to a great degree. I was pretty impressed. The cymbals did sound like a snake, and I was able to hear enough separation to hear all the instruments. For Bluetooth, they are pretty good. I was able to hear the background rifts were strong and punctual and lyrics pretty good. The headphones performed noticeably better than my other earbuds, including the Sonys on Bluetooth. But with a 400$ difference in retail price that was expected. But while I was listening to it, I felt that I was missing something. There was some fullness or reverberation of the full rifts that were missing from my Sonys. I cabled up my Sonys and tried again. It doesn’t hold a candle to the headphones.
Bad Guy – Billie Elish
I chose this song because it’s a pop song that has quite a bit of bass. My initial thought when I was listening to these were hey, “this pumps out pretty good bass”. But then I realized that it felt a little too strong like it was trying too hard. I thought something was really off. so I immediately stopped the song and tried it on my more reliable headphones. It was almost as if I was listening to a different song. Yeah… If you are getting these earphones to listen to songs with heavy bass, skip these.
One Summer Day – Joe Hisaishi
Joe Hisaishi is a genius when it comes to piano modern orchestral music. It’s a relatively short modern classical piece that crescendos pretty quickly and, I think, a pretty good sample to get a feel of the headphone’s range of classical music. It played the song pretty well. I actually enjoyed it when I wasn’t paying attention to the song. But when then, I realized that a lot of the depth was lost. When I listen to it with my complete headphones, you really get the sense that you are outside on a summer day. But the IE80s, I feel, but something is lacking. The soft hum that you hear while Joe was playing the piano was a bit dull. But some depth I felt was lost.
Perfect – Ed Sheeran
A good song to hear vocals. I think most people would be satisfied. The songs sound beautiful on it but noticeably flatter.
Battery –
With a six-hour battery life, that’s horrible. I thought I could manage through the day with it, but six doesn’t cut it. New Sonys have about 24 hours. What will happen if the IE80s start losing its charge. A huge negative.
Verdict- I feel that the Bluetooth capabilities severely hinder the full range of the notes. As a Bluetooth headset, they are fantastic. But I feel that because these are marketed for Audiophiles, they should have included a corded cable for those that really care about the sound. It noticeably falls flat when you care to notice. As someone who cares about the sound, these headphones, I can’t recommend to anyone.
