I bought these with the Audio Technica ATH-AD500X. I kept the AT’s. The Philips are very nice. I prefer their more traditional look, and they feel a bit more solid. I also appreciate the detachable cord. I found the AT’s sounded more accurate though. The SHP9500S was just not quite as “clean”, and didn’t have nearly as wide/deep a sound stage (I think that’s what they call it). Listening to well recorded live albums (Bill Evans live at Village Vanguard, Little Feat Waiting for Columbus), and a couple studio albums, the Philips’ seem to be slightly “veiled” in comparison. The Philips had significantly more sound bleed than the AT for some reason. The SHP9500S is a nice headphone for the price. It just depends what your listening priorities are. See my review of the AT for further comparison.

Half the price of my Sennheiser HD-558 open headphones, these Philips open headphones have a sound which is just as luscious, rich, wide-open and detailed, right out of the box, and should only improve with burning-in.

Like the Senns, the Philips phones have a replaceable cord that plugs into the headphones, but with a crucial difference: the Senns require a proprietary connector at the headset end of the cord. In contrast, the Philips cord can be replaced with ANY CORD T0HAT HAS A STANDARD 3.8 mm MALE PLUG AT EACH END! These standard off-the-shelf cables are available in any length you could want, and at a very small price (under $5) compared with the $24 Sennheiser charges for their proprietary replacement cord, which is available in only one or two lengths from Sennheiser (at $24). If requsted, I will insert an Amazon link to the 36 inch cord I use.

Note: The ear cups are true “circum-aural” design, meaning they enclose and surround the ears, without touching them. There is no pressure at all on the ears. I insist on circum-aural ear cups, and I refuse to ever use “on the ear” earpads found on cheap inferior headphones, which usually result in ear pain.

Yeah, from what I can tell everything you’ve heard about these budget-friendly headphones is correct. They sound like a much more expensive headphone. Seriously, they just… they’re great. For this money, it’s really tough to beat. When I say everything you’ve heard about these headphones, I mean everything. The clamp is loose. Like, “I’m worried to look down while cooking” loose because I feel as though they may fall off my head. Also, the earpads don’t breathe at all. They aren’t itchy like I find with some pads, but they sure do let your sweat buildup inside. If you really want to do a little bit of digging and emailing, you can find places to help you modify these to replace the earpads. It may be worth looking into if you love to tinker. If you don’t love to tinker, they still work great. I really do enjoy that the simplicity of having a male to male headphone cord too. No wonky cable ends here!

But if you want a great set of open cans with lots of room for your ears, this is a great purchase. You can grab a V-Moda (Or equivalent) and turn this into a headset for gaming. Personally, I use a V-Moda and run these off of my phone a lot while I’m doing errands at home since I get a lot of phone calls during the day. Works like a charm.

    The Headphone is nice !
_ I use it for mostly gaming and movie, switching from Sennheiser HD 598 (Gave it to my wife)
_ The sound stage of this headphone is great if not amazing, i can identify directions where the sounds are coming from easily. This is great for gaming especially FPS, and with a V-Moda mic for $25 bucks you got a gaming headset under $90 dollars that easily beat any gaming headset below $150
_ I would say this is as comfortable as the HD 598 it has less clamping force but the ear pad on HD 598 feel better and replacable

-1 Star because the box that arrived is damaged i was worried that they ship me a “Used” one instead. The inside is clean and nice doesn’t look like “Used” but i am still convince that this is “Open box” product which is not nice … i would have bring down more star if the headphone is not as great as it is

I bought this for a family member and I am comparing this to my other two open back headsets by Audio-Technica (ATH-AD700, ATH-AD500X). I have a really big melon so the headset design of the ATH-AD700 was perfect for me. I have been happily using that headset since late 2011. I wanted a headset for my home so I got the cheaper downgraded model ATH-AD500X after my logitech headset broke. Again due to the size of my head I keep breaking headsets right where the ear cup connects to the head strap. So far its killed two Logitech’s and a Bose…

I let the person who would be receiving it try my headsets before buying this one and they really did not like the Audio-Technica ergonomics, but they did like the sound quality. So after a ton of research this headset kept coming up on searches for good headsets for the value.

The build quality of this headset is above average and I absolutely love the detachable cable. Doing a sound comparison with several people they all agreed that the ATH-AD500X sounded a bit better, but I was the only one that liked the ergonomics. The only complaint that final end user had was that the clamping force was a bit too weak no matter how they were adjusted. That being said I would highly recommend this headset as a great bang for the buck.
