I have had SE-215’s since 2014. They sound good and are built of last. I started to use the Etymotic ER4SR’s in 2020. I very much liked them they sounded just a bit better then the 215’s. The big downside of the These newer Etymōtic is their fragility. They use a proprietary version of the MMCX plug. The way it snaps into the base of the earpiece makes them vulnerable to pulling the guts out of the earpiece if a separation tool is not used. Even with the separation tool this has happened twice to me. While this was going on my trusty 215’s were doing their job. I finally wore out the first SE-215 it lasted over 10 years. I last set of ER4SR started to have problems. The quality of Etymotic earphone has seem to have gone down. This time I decided to go upscale with what I knew, Shure. The SE-425’s with its present discount is actually cheaper them the ER4SR’s.

    The Sure SE-425 Pro.
Except for the pair of Shure balanced armature drivers these 425 are identical to the 215’s. so the fit was very familiar. I had been forewarned that they would require about 40 hours to burn in. This also was not a surprise, I just have to compare a set of my 215’s with thousands of hours on them with a new set. At first the highs were a bit sharp but that settle down real fast. I am driving them with a FiiO BTR7 DAC/Amp which can drive the 425’s to mind bending HiRes sound levels. Comparing them with the ER4SR’s the 425’s have a lot of everything. very defined bass, the midrange checking in as they burnt in, and the highs mellowing out as their play time increased. I am not going back Etymotic is now in secondary status the 425’s have beaten them out.

Here is a tip for a big sound improvement on these 425’s. I have long since used balance feed cabling on my earphones. You have to have a DAC/Amp that supports it but the improvement in sound is well beyond the voodoo audio golden ear level. At the sametime I ordered the 425’s I ordered the FiiO LC-RC Earphone cable with 2.5mm/3.5mm/4.4mm Swappable Plugs. The improvement in sound the cables gave the 425’s is nothing less than astonishing. The first clue you have is you have to turn the volume down.

This review is for bikers wearing noise-isolating earphones under the helmet. Not for audiophiles. It feels awkward considering the IEM primary purpose, however due to obvious legal/liability reasons established motorcycle audio brands like Sena and Cardo will never ever offer noise-isolating (or canceling) earphones, so we, unrefined bikers, listening to EDM (metal, rap, or whatever float your non classical musician’s boat) have to shop for audiophile products. With significantly higher 90db road wind isolation requirements. Though I wonder how typical poor foam tip isolation works for rock musicians on stage.

Cranking up the volume of “premium JBL” (or another brand) Cardo and Sena speakers at 90mph (on the track, as for the record I never in my life exceeded a posted highway speed limit) is not an option. Neither is the magic ANC of late. And I’m talking about the best noise-cancelling buds (that can still be worn under the helmet) like Sony LInkbuds S. Not your typical trendy Airpods Pro, which perform mediocre even inside a car. Only the passive isolation works. My old Etymotic ER6is finally gave up (weak wires), which brought me here.

Isolation is critical for bikers. The sound quality comes second. No one would enjoy the wide soundstage overlayed over the road noise. 425s isolate well, though are shy of ER6i performance. And compared to the newer Etymotic ER models, dare I say, are painless (inside the helmet). Not surprisingly, the only tips that work (as always) are the triple-flange ones. Not only they isolate orders of magnitude better than the foam ones (including the “fancy” yellow tips), they also somewhat fix the bass issue, as, I guess, more sonic energy is pumped deep into one’s ear canal.

However, in my non-musician opinion, the two-channel sound is artificial almost to the point of distorted mids, noticeable in (mostly female) EDM vocals. 215s sound just right – at 1/3 of the price. I’ll post a review of 215s as well. For whatever reason however, as they need to be identical shape-wise, 425s isolated well, and 215s didn’t – with the same standard white triple-flange tips. You can experiment by getting longer-stem third-party tips or cut useless other ones included in the box to make 2-3mm “spacers”. The goal is to insert the tips as deep, as you can while making the earphone plastic body firmly rest inside your ear w/o sticking out and hanging on the rubber stem.

In any case, for the price, I’d go with 215s – after the aforementioned experiments. The 425 sound is a bit mediocre. And if you don’t ride, five-channel KZ AS10 and ZS10 sound way better at the fraction of that price, though unfortunately don’t fit under the helmet.

Wide soundstage, a flat frequency response (with rich and textured mids ,will make listening to distorted guitars so much more pleasurable)and being a IEM the sound isolation is synonymous to shures. Would suggest using an external amp bass boost or equaliser bass improvement as most of the current gen music is spoilt with frequency spectrum leaning towards that extra oomph over bassy side.

One of the most durable headphones. I walked into the sea with one of these in my pocket. Noth No happened. Almost seemed to me like a joke when I read one of the reviews saying that the headphones have no bass. Guys, that is bull s*** and believe me that These have a solid punchy bass. Period.
If you’re u don’t have money to throw on good pair of headphones, buy some jbl rubbish headphones and be a regular zhopadpatti fellow. This headphone pair is a work of art and not meant for just any other idiot on the street.

I have a pair of 425s. I’m not sure these are a huge step better. I can count on years of using Shure in-ears gigging many weekend and a week rehearsal. If you sweat a lot you may go through them faster. I’d pack them with a silicon packet when done using. Also don’t turn them up all the way. Probably should be used for loudness reduction not loudness addition…. Which is how I’ve used them too much.

The bass, I found was slightly lacking since I’m used to the more bass heavy Yamaha EPH-100. Nonetheless, it was sufficient, clear and vibrant. Everything else is pristine. Good soundstage n all. A good burn-in of around 6-10 hrs will get you used to the sound. Still wish for more bass :p
