I recently invested in a Sony MP3 player. The reviews had talked about the sparkling sound, even in relation to the ipod, but I was left disappointed. I ditched the headphones it came with and switched to a pair of Sony MDR in-ear headphones. Still disappointed by the thin sound. Then I tried these. They are a lot of money for a set of earbuds (but by no means the most expensive). Wow! A full, round sound, natural across the frequencies, depth, clarity and detail. These have transformed my listening experience on the go and I cannot praise them highly enough.

I bought this set along with similar in-ear sets in the same price range: Shure SE110 ($100), V Moda Vibe ($65), Sony MDREX85LP ($65) and tested each one to determine which I would keep. I could understand how anyone could listen to each of these sets and proclaim each as great when referenced against stock ipod/mp3 speakers. Against that comparison all four of these were a big improvement. However, when compared against each other, there were major differences. The Sony’s had good bass, but were not crisp and had seemed cheap when compared against the others. The Shure’s were very flat. Shockingly, for $100, you don’t get much here. The V-moda’s were very good. Excellent bass, clarity and build quality. However, the sharpness was too much for my ears and I could never get a comfortable setting on the ipod. Finally, I listened to the Super.fi.3’s. Quite simply a great balance between low, mid and high ranges for my ears. Good comfort and strong build quality synched the purchase. They are slightly “tinny” so I can not give 5 stars. Still I can not believe the disparity between this pair and the Shure’s (similar price range). The salesperson, who sold both pairs agreed. I really don’t think you can go wrong with these if you are looking in this price range!

I’m very pleased with the Ultimate Ears Super.fi 3. The soundstage is excellent. While they are not bass heavy, the bass reproduction is more than adequate for my taste. I listen to a wide variety of musical styles, ranging from vintage to modern jazz, vintage to modern classical, blues, rock and Americana. I listen to both acoustic and electric. These buds sound very good.

The issues that kept me from rating them with 5 stars:

    1) Getting them to fit is essential to hearing how good they sound, but getting them to fit right requires a lot of fiddling. For the moment, I’ve settled on the large adapters. They do a great job of sealing out most outside sound. However they do feel a bit full in my ears. None of the other adapters sound nearly as good as the large ones do.

    2) The wire is stiff. This isn’t an issue as long as I’m sitting still.

I bought the Super.fi 3s because the iBuds that came with my gen2 Apple iPod did not stay in my ear except when doing nothing but sitting relatively motionless. After checking many reviews I settled on the Super.fi 3 canal earphones — not too, too expensive with supposedly good sound. There is no question they stay in my ear even with high physical activity as a canal earphone should, and they are very well made. However, the sound is a disappointment — weak bass even when installed properly. Also, the cord is too stiff for convenience. I have since purchased Lajo silicone canal-skins for my Apple iBuds and find these greatly improve the staying put problem and give me a more preferable sound on balance (list price <$10 versus $100 for Super.fi 3's!).

…system on my computer and PDA (Dell) because whenever I use the “full base” preset mode on my winamp to listen to pop songs (just to test the bass) such as The thongsong by Sisqo and My Hump by Black Eyed Pea the bass became extremely gargled and ruffled and unclear. But when I sacrifice that bass setting for a more flat setting it sounds great. On my boyfriend’s computer, though, it worked fine (Gateway tablet PC) so I am thinking it’s not the headphone’s problem with the bass but rather, the sound card on my systems.

Nonetheless, after trying this one, and shure e2c-g, and etymotics er6i, I think the sound system of this set is somewhere in between shure and etymotics on all levels (lows, mid-range and highs). The shures, I found to have awesome bass, but lacking clarity on the mid to higher notes (I am no audio expert so please take this on a grain of salt) while the etymotics had almost no bass to me (I am not a bass head either since I enjoy classical music, techno (such as TaQ) and video game/anime music) when I tested the bass with The thongsong by Sisqo and My Hump by Black Eyed Pea, but a little too high pitched and hurt my ears.

This one seems to have a smoother, in-between sound, but in order to give you guys a better idea I’d probably need to invest in a better sound system to go with it. I do still wish it has a little more bass to get that “kick” in my pop music when I do listen to hip hop and rap.

So far I think it’s a keeper, though. I look forward to wearing it on the airplane this summer on the way to Asia.
