I’ve been using these for about a month, listening to a variety of music ranging from classical to ambient to rap to industrial, in a variety of environments.
The sound quality is very good, although most likely due to being a single balanced armature, you hear the bass instead of feeling it. Vocals sound very clear and highs don’t fatigue the ear. The noise cancellation works very well, while silent constant droning noise is blocked out completely while voices have the typical noise cancelling “Underwater” sound to them. When music is playing, all external sound quieter than a human yell is inaudible.
Build quality is very decent, aside from the cable being a bit thin and flimsy feeling, however I keep them in the provided case at all times, to avoid losing the included proprietary USB charger. It’s about the size and shape of a typical thumb drive, with a 3.5mm headphone jack on one end. It has surprisingly good build quality. What I absolutely hate is the fact that I have to carry it with me as these earbuds will not work at all without the noise cancelling. They have to be turned on (there’s a power button in the location where an inline mic is on most earbuds) after you plug them in or they simply don’t play any sound.
This design flaw is especially horrible considering that the only way to charge them is with the included charger, which Sony doesn’t make anymore.
Value: From my research these originally sold for $550 in 2011, and were billed as the world’s smallest noise cancelling earbuds. From lack of sales due to the high price they seem to have depreciated to around $50 today –– if you’re willing to put up with never being able to use them after losing the charger I’d say go for it, as there really isn’t anything else that has this level of sound quality combined with active noise cancellation anywhere near this price; not to mention the in-ear format.

I’m sorry Sony, I really like you but you cheated on me by making these terrible ear buds.
This model doesn’t cancel any noise. Forget the 97.5% claim, that is untrue. Maybe 5% on a good day. Very disappointing, especially considering these are a high-end product. These replaced the older version in my go-bag, but the older version worked much better.
Pros:
* Lots of fitting options
Cons:
* Doesn’t cancel ANY noise (at least not any airplane noise)
* Uses internal battery that you can’t easily/quickly recharge when it runs out on the airplane. Old version with replaceable AA battery was better.
* Sound quality is so-so (and I’m being generous)
* Travel case is cheap
* No display to tell you what mode it is in or even if it is powered on. Has an LED but reading it’s signals is like learning sign language.
Awful product.
My wife uses the over-the-ear version (from Sony) and they work fine. These stink.

I bought this set looking for a replacement to my proven Apple earbuds
Apple MA850G/A In-Ear Headphones with Remote and Mic
expecting something much better from a brand like Sony!
The bottom line is – What a let down, and considering the price tag, what a rip off!
Starting with the sound quality – this set sounds like a cheap set of lousy earphones. It reproduces the high end clearly and crisply but towards the mid range and down its mostly absent. What I am getting is a hollow and distorted sound, like listening through a tin can. I tested it with 4 devices (iPod nano
Apple iPod nano 16 GB Graphite (6th Generation) NEWEST MODEL
, iPad
Apple iPad 2 MC979LL/A Tablet (16GB, Wifi, White) 2nd Generation
, iPhone
Apple iPhone 4 16GB Smartphone Black (AT&T)
and my trusted MacBook Pro
Apple MacBook Pro MD313LL/A 13.3-Inch Laptop (NEWEST VERSION)
). Unfortunately the performance is equally miserable on all devices. At louder volumes the distortion introduced by this device is very noticeable and extremely crippling the sound.
Noise reduction – very modest results. Noise is managing to penetrate into the sound field, although not as loudly as without the earphones 🙂 But comparing to my Apple earphones which come with a great earbuds that seal off the environment the results are pretty much on par.
Wire length – seems to be too long for my use. I use the earbuds in the gym and the long wire gets in the way. When wrapped on the attached organizer it becomes cumbersome.
Attached cloths fastener – not sure how it can be used as it is too stiff to attach to a T-shirt. Might work better on a leading edge of a suite though not my use case.
On top of that it lacks any of the Apple amenities such as the correct length of wire, the built in microphone, play/pause and volume control which I find missing in the gyn environment.
Very peculiar – with my iPod nano, the iPod volume control stops working with these earphones attached.
Bottom line – I am going to put them away and will give them one more chance next time I get to fly. Maybe they will prove as handier in that environment. Until such a time no more fancy new gadgets from Sony

Would love to hear an updated version for this. The look is pretty the best of all in ear noise cancelling.
There is some hissing noted when NC is activated but it ain’t that big of a deal when you listen to dance / trance cause the beats will drown it away.

I had given only 3 stars due to NC is weak and there is cord noise rubbing the body.
I have other NC earphone from audio-technical & bose. This you can hear the music without the noise on train, bus and plane.
Otherwise the sound quality is very good. But the bass is not heavy like those beats headphone.
Not suitable for those that like heavy bass.
